Wanganui In Bloom

"If there were a prize for New Zealand's prettiest main street, Wanganui would win every time." Bethney McLennan, The Dominion Post
The hanging baskets and flowering troughs adorning Victorian gas lamps, verandahs and archways were first introduced 12 years ago by Mainstreet Wanganui to enhance the upgrade of Victoria Avenue and its side streets. From December through to April and again from June to October these stunning aerial gardens bring colour and vibrancy to inner city environs.
The hanging baskets have attracted strong support from Mainstreet Wanganui businesses who purchase the baskets at the beginning of each season.
Bristols Plants & Seeds have a data base of all areas in the CBD identifying the micro-climates, positions of strong sunlight, wind tunnels and other factors affecting the condition of the plants and determine what will grow best in each situation. They also consider the colour requests of each Mainstreet Wanganui business.
Maintenance of the baskets includes daily watering by truck or irrigation system, fertilization every two days, weeding every month and replacement if the baskets are damaged by vandals or affected by inclement weather.
This maintenance is essential to the success of the project and is reliant on the generous funding provided by The Wanganui District Council and The Whanganui Community Foundation.
