Animals in WW1

animals in ww1July - October 2015
These colourful memorials currently adorning Victoria Avenue have been made by students from Keith Street School, Okoia School, Carlton School and St Mary's and remember the animals that were vital in supporting soldiers and the war effort during World War One. Horses, dogs and pigeons all played an important role. Horses carried officers into the field or hauled heavy loads of supplies. Dogs worked as sentries, scouts, ratters, casualty finders, 's messengers and mascots. Pigeons, called the "winged wireless", carried messages and with their speed and strength had a 95% success rate. We honour the memory of these animals.

Puanga Garden

puanga at majestic square 2015Nau mai Haere mai! Join us in our rohe (region) as we celebrate Puanga and Matariki. Matai ki te rangi, tera ko Puanga. Ko te tohu mo te tau hou. As one gazes to the heavens it is Puanga signalling the new year.

Visit Majestic Square between now and Thursday 30 July to see the installation of the Puanga garden. This year’s kaupapa (theme) is nga manu (the birds). All the plants in the garden are favoured food sources or nesting trees for our native birds. At midday on Thursday 30 July please join us at Majestic Square as we de-install the garden and receive a free native plant to take home for your garden.
